Raxatech's Chief Scientist - Katya Volkova

Description

I'd like to introduce you to the chief Scientist of Raxatech's Genetics and Robotics division, Катя Волкова. A gifted child from the Kirovsky district of St. Petersburg, Katya received her Certificate of Secondary Complete General Education shortly after her thirteenth birthday. Throughout school, she had displayed an unusually high adeptness and love for biology and chemistry. Her father, a mortician, would allow her to perform amateur autopsies on the bodies at his funeral home. The local authorities credit her father with alerting them to at least two separate cases of foul play.

Katya completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in medicine over the next four years and became a doctor with a focus on pharmacology at seventeen. She spent only a brief stint employed at an area hospital before leaving to pursue further study. Several people have asked why she did not continue with her residency but Katya simply states that she was unsatisfied with the opportunities it presented.

Having relocated to Moscow, she enrolled at the prestigious Vector Genetics Institute where she quickly attracted the attention of Raxatech's recruiters. Her first year was disrupted by the tragic disappearance of her roommate and four other fellow students. Despite the emotional turmoil and chaotic fallout of that event, Katya was able to secure her Ph.D. in medical genetics only two years later.

Investigators later removed her as a person of interest when it was revealed that she had been on contract with Raxatech at the time and could be accounted for by building access records. This information was not originally available due to an ongoing non-disclosure agreement. Full records were immediately released upon project completion towards the end of her second year at the university.

After school, Dr. Volkova was quickly promoted into the ranks of Raxatech's secret genetics labs. Within eighteen months, she had secured herself a position as Dr. Mordev's assistant and second-in-command. Just recently, Katya was forced to take the reigns of the department when a massive explosion left Dr. Mordev and several staff dead or otherwise incapable of continuing their work. Since then, Katya has excelled in her position as Chief Scientist and is responsible for several significant breakthroughs.

Every single team member is quick to extol her virtues, hurriedly indicating that she is brilliant and exceptionally skilled at what she does. Whenever the subject comes up, they are immediately relay to the success of her works or the potential benefits of the current project. Certainly, she is so highly admired that none of her co-workers are able to find fault.

Production Notes
This represents a couple of weeks of overall work. The character is a mix of several components and a lot of custom tweaking. I was aiming for a Russian look and would welcome some feedback as to what I may have gotten correct / incorrect.

As with everything, the concept evolved as I added elements. In this case, a back-story began to develop which drove several different concepts. In short, I've started to develop a story behind my images which has already fueled further ideas and has me branching into writing. I'm not certain if it will end up as a full fledged comic, but I can definately say that you'll get more Raxatech story and images with the genetic and robotic experimentation theme.

The clone tank in the background was added after some of the story had developed to give the lab a more sinister feel. I wanted to have the material clash to give the sense that the room may have evolved around some older technology. If I had to do it over again, I would likely have choosen a different tank and surfaces. I think it clashes a bit too much and there are some basic issues with the object that weren't apparent until it was too late.

This project also made me painfully aware that I need to expand my selection of jewelry for the later figures. It feels like I spent more than half of my time posing and reposing that damned necklace.

Rendered for around 24 hours at 9999x6666. (I say 'around' because I discovered that my computer was going to sleep while rendering, running the clock without any progress.) Only slight touch-up in Photoshop, then scaled down to 6000x4000 to sharpen it up.
